What are math talks?

Math Talk Moves
Using math talk moves allows my students to practice 21st Century collaboration and critical thinking skills.
Math Talks is an overarching methodology which works toward the development of a mathematical learning community. It is a highly structured system based upon the following four components: questioning, explaining math thinking, source of math ideas and responsibility for learning. These four components are integral parts of each level of Math Talks. The levels of competency range from 0 to 3. The implementation of Math Talks cannot be accomplished in a short period of time. It often takes two or three months to begin to advance students to its higher levels.

My fourth graders use these communication tools as a way to collaborate.
Number Talks is a methodology of instruction which enables teachers to change their practices in order to have students better comprehend mathematical dispositions. The process entails a five to fifteen minute conversation around selected computational problems. Students are asked to communicate their thinking when presenting a problem which was solved mentally or on paper. Number Talks provide a vehicle to introduce and prepare students to participate in a Math Talks community.
